NEWARK — The brother of a retired Newark police lieutenant has been charged with killing his cousin and shooting his stepmother in the city on New Year’s Eve, prosecutors said.
Antonio Diaz, 47, of Newark, faces murder and weapons charges after he allegedly shot and killed his cousin, 45-year-old Juan Carlos Diaz, around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of Sussex Avenue, said Anthony Ambrose, the Essex County Prosecutor’s chief of detectives.
Antonio Diaz also shot his stepmother in the stomach during the altercation, but she is expected to survive, according to Ambrose and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio. Police did not identify the injured woman
The suspect’s brother, Victor Diaz, is a retired Newark police lieutenant, according to Ambrose. He could not be reached for comment today.
Ambrose said the cousins were involved in a dispute prior to the shooting, but he did not offer specifics.
Newark police officers Kenneth Brown and Salvatore Galvano captured Antonio Diaz at the scene a short time after the killing, according to Ambrose, who said several handguns were also recovered.
The shooting marked Newark’s 111th homicide of 2013, the city’s deadliest year since 1990.
